Security officer killed during robbery of sweepstakes parlor in Burlington

BURLINGTON, NC — A security officer at a sweepstakes parlor was killed during a robbery at the business Sunday.

 

At 9:19 p.m., police, fire and EMS went to Gone Fishing Sweepstakes, which is in the rear of the A1 Pawn building at 1365 N. Church St., in response to a robbery and a shooting, according to a police news release.

Upon arrival, three victims were located. An employee and a patron were suffering from head wounds after being shot multiple times. The third victim, the security officer, was hit in the back.

The security officer was pronounced dead upon arrival at Alamance Regional Medical Center. In addition to being shot, it was discovered that the officer had been bludgeoned. Prior to being shot, his duty weapon was stolen from him, according to the news release.

The injured patron and employee were treated and released from the hospital with bruising and swelling to the head.

The three suspects fled on foot behind the business toward South Beaumont Avenue. Suspect descriptions were incomplete.

A witness gave a description of a dark-colored car as the suspect vehicle.
